Regular Visit - 11th September 2010

Volunteers who turned up for yesterday's session certainly have a meaningful day!

We have some volunteers engaging in hands-on activity with Kuan Por Por.

We also have another group of volunteers who helped to clean up Uncle Liu's house, transforming it into a place fit for entrance without having to not remove your shoes and sitting on newspaper.

Regular Visit - 28th August 2010

Something new was tried out on our regular visit today!

In addition to chatting with the L-DERLY and doing household chores for them, we also played games with them. Not only does this add colours to our usual mundane visits, it also served as a warm welcome to freshies who attended our session today, their first visit to the L-DERLY's homes.

However, as many L-DERLY were going on an outing, not all L-DERLY under us were able to enjoy the game with us. Nevertheless, it was a different experience for all of us, BEFRIENDERS.

Familiarization Day

Familiarization Day, which we have been preparing for the past one month, has fianally come to end! Thank you everyone for all the hard work and effort put in, both existing members and freshies' volunteers!

Especially to HUIJIE, our Pragramme IC, for organizing the activities and games for today's Familizarization Day! A BIG THANK YOU for preparing the materials needed for memory game, Bingo, Lucky Draw . . . We all know you spent a lot of time and effort in this :) Even though, we might not have the chance to utilize everything that was prepared today, I'm sure the volunteers and elderly had an enjoyable day!

Even though is didn't turn out to be as successful as we thought it would be, with unexpected issues and problems, it is still a meaningful event!

Outreach Programme

A big THANK YOU to all for helping out during the CSC Outreach Programme and making it a successful one! TAION, WEILING, ERIC, GHIMHONG, JIEYING, GUANWEI, GUANZHI & HUIJIE. And also to those who visited our booth during this period of time (17-19 August). And also, not forgetting those who help, encourage and support us in one way or another. THANKS!!

Familiarization Day

The FIRST special event for LB this new semester would be our FAMILIARIZATION DAY!

This year's Familiarization Day would be held on 21st August, on a Saturday from 1.30pm to 4pm. Venue will be at Blk 3 Jalan Bukit Merah, as usual. Exciting games and programmes are put in place for the L-DERLYS, as well as for the FRESHIES, for them to enjoy themselves on this meaningful day. We will be playing our CLASSIC BINGO! together with other hands-on activities to make the day a fun-filled one.

LB Chinese New Year Celebration 2010

Hey all,
well this is an extremely late blog entry (sorry been busy, forgetful, and probably procrastinating...)

this is probably my first proper blog entry since accepting the post of pub in LB
(lol sorry wei ling, been slacking like crazy)

Hope you guys, and girls, have been enjoying visiting at LB so far.

For Chinese New Year (CNY), LB celebrated it at the void deck as usual. However, this time we used the area with the metal grills, which is considered the KTV room.

The space was relatively smaller then the usual placed used, but we made do with what we had, and proceeded.

To make the prizes a bit more interesting (hopefully), hampers were made (items taken from everywhere and bought, but wrapped by tai on and wei ling).

Initially, even thou it was time to start the event, few elderly were around. I was a bit puzzled and thought something was wrong, but I was reminded by the person from the centre that the elderly were taking their ang bao money from the temple, and that it would take them time to get it and come back.

So we waited patiently for a while, and true enough, the elderly started streaming back soon. Gradually the place filled up. We had no time to waste.

First, we busied ourselves with preparing the food and drink. Basically we served hot milo and pandan cake, which arent exactly new year goodies, but the elderly were quite happy eating and drinking them. As such, we were rushing around trying to top up their food and drinks. It was messy, but at the same time touching to see the elderly all sitting together and talking happily. The place was very roudy for once, something that I think is rare for the void deck at Blk 3 Jalan Bukit Merah.

At the same time, our MC's (the ppl talking in front) busied themselves with talking to the crowd and getting them involved in the activities.

We did a list of interesting activities this time.

To begin, we had simple charades, with the LB volunteers doing simple actions and let the elderly guess what it is. I still remember one specific one, where the volunteer went down on all fours and mimicked the action of a lion roaring to represent a tiger! His enthusiasm caught most of the elderly off guard.

Next, we had the traditional Bingo that the elderly love. We knew it would get them excited, and it did. Everyone was eager to get a card and were straining to hear the numbers being called out, hoping that they would get the luck card that won the prizes.

Following that, we had a simple pass the balloon game, similar to musical chairs. We played music while the elderly passed the balloon around. The place was a bit too big for one balloon thou, but they had fun and were unwilling to let go of the balloon, no thanks to the fact that the person who had the balloon at the end of the music would win a prize.

After that, we did the lucky draw after the balloon game. Some lucky elderly won prizes after their number cards were called.

It was then back to more exciting activities! The elderly were asked to blow ping pong balls from one cup to another. The cups were filled to the brim with water, so all that was needed would be a slight blow, but the catch is that if they failed, water would be blown out instead and it would be harder to move the ping pong ball from one to another. Water was flowing around the tables, but the elderly were enjoying it a lot. All one needed to do was look at the smiles on their faces, and one realised that it was fun.

The last activity was a simple one, where the elderly were asked to do simple chinese caligraphy, writing auspicious words such as 'fu' and 'chun' on pieces of red paper, something that is usually done during CNY to bring in good luck.

The elderly all left for home after the activities ended, but none of them left empty handed. We distributed goodie bags to everyone at the end of the event, as well as a pair of oranges.

It was a simple event to celebrate, one that has happened many times before and will happen many times in the future. However, what counts most is that we made them happy before, we made them happy this time, and we will make them happy in the future as well.

Bingo
Volunteers should help the elderly to spot the numbers that were called.Winner will be the first to clear five numbers in a row.

Memory Game
Before the start of the game, we will show elderly 6 objects. Elderly should remember all these objects and the colour of that object. Then, a bag which consists of all these objects and some other additional objects will be given to each table. Elderly are requires to take out all the objects that have shown to them earlier. The group that manages to show all the correct objects will be the winner.

Spot the differences
Elderly are required to find the differences between pictures given. There are 10 differences in each set of picture. Each group will be given 2 sets of picture. The group that able to spot all the differences in the shortest time will be the winner.

How well do you know about mid-autumn festival?
There will be five questions regarding mid-autumn festival. Elderly that able to answer the question will be given a small packet of gift.

Chopsticks game
Each table will be given two ping-pong balls. Elderly have to pass the ping-pong ball with chopsticks to the next elderly. The last elderly who gets the ball will have to put it into the bowl provided. This is a game that requires teamwork and concentration. The group that manages to pass the ball in the shortest time will be the winner.

Craft work(making a paper lantern)
Volunteers are required to assist elderly in making the paper lantern. The purpose of making paper lantern is to spread the joy of mid – autumn festival.

Instructions

Step 1: Draw or decorate the paper as desired.
Step2: Fold the paper in half. Make sure the upper length of your paper is connected to the bottom length of your paper.
Step3: Hold the paper in a way that the folded edge is facing you. Then, cut through the paper that is approximately 1cm apart. Cut through the fold of the paper upward to about 1.5-2cm from the top edge of paper. Do not cut clear through the paper.
Step 4: Unfold the paper. Then, roll the paper gently. Glue or staple the paper along the length-wise edge and put the two ends together
Step 5: The strip given will be the handle for the lantern. Staple or glue one end of the strip of paper to each side of the lantern.

CNY/ Valentine's Day Celebration

heys!

it's been some time since i last came here. and now is indeed the time of assignments and midterms and projects! -woes-

anyway, LB celebrated a late chinese new year and a on-the-dot valentine's day with the elderly on 14th February (: the event was also kindly sponsored by the Singapore Refinery Centre and their volunteers came down to spread the love and joy around as well.

the event was well-received i suppose, with a whopping of more than 90 elderly? heh cant rmb the exact number but the whole place was filled. we played some games to start it off, such as charades, the jigsaw puzzles, and using angpow paper to form auspiscious or romantic chinese characters like 福 or 爱. the elderly also got to prepare a mini gift bag for themselves with the colourful papers, soapbars and salonpas. haha. jian cong from CSC came armed with a harmonica and three beautiful songs to memerise the elderly. =p

but the best part was the buffet lunch (sponsored by SRC), and i guess it really blessed the elderly. and of course, we also had a cai shen ye to literally bless them with angpows.

so that day marked a joyous celebration for the elderly, and do hope they enjoyed it!

Christmas/ dong zhi celebration on 20 Dec 2008

"Oh... You are from NUS. Thank you for holding this party for us," some of the elderly expressed their appreciation of our efforts even before we started the x'mas celebration. To kick-start the day, we have a new combi of MC for the day. They are Eunice and Tai On.

The first item of the celebration is to make tang yuan.

Followed by scavenger hunt...

Bingo...

And not forgetting to eat tang yuan.

That ends the celebration. This is also the last visit of 2008, and let's take a group photo to mark the end of 2008.

Canto Group visit to Auntie Fong on 25 Oct 2008

While many of the volunteers were doing painting at Uncle Yeo’s house, the rest of Canto group had not been exactly idling. We did cleaning at Auntie Fong’s place. Auntie Fong is better known as the High Level Canto Auntie.

As some of the volunteers in Canto Group could not understand Auntie Fong, I would like to make use of this blog to tell you that Auntie Fong really appreciated our work. She actually said the floors looked white. You girls are fantastic!

Painting at Uncle Yeo's house on 25 Oct 2008

"Uncle Yeo!" called the volunteers as we were approahing his house, and were greeted by his friendly smile and warm welcome. After some chit-chatting, we got into some serious work... that is... to paint his house. Haha...

The house is divided into two halves. As can be seen on the right picture, we have painted one half, and the other half (left picture) will be painted on the next visit, on 8 Nov.

I understand that there were some interested volunteers who did not have the chance to involve in the painting today. To avoid disappointment, do contact your group leader or Jia Yan if you are interested.

Lastly, let's thanks everyone who have contributed to the success of today's painting, volunteers from Canto group, Terence and many more... And let's hope that a brand new coat of paint on the walls of Uncle Yeo's house will be ready at the end of next visit! :)

Since our new volunteers have not post any entry, I shall have the honor of blogging on LB On The Blog. The visit on 13 Sep is the second regular visit of this sem. We gathered at our favorite void deck corner before separating into the respective dialect groups.

Canto Group had made plan to paint High Level Canto Auntie’s home, but she was not in again. Sin en if you are reading this, I am sorry I failed you.

Many of the Cantonese speaking elderly is not at home. Hopefully it’s because Mid Autumn Festival is round the corner and our elderly is spending time with their love ones.

Nevertheless, we found our refuge at Chong Por Por’s home. Her friend, the ever smiling Kuan Por Por was also there. We did some cleaning, ate some food, watched blurred telly and talked about a lot of things. The swelling in Chong Por Por’s legs have returned. She taught us to eat healthily. She talked about her mother. She still encouraged us to study hard. Perhaps this is moving towards the Next Level that some of us are striving for.

On a different note, LB is having the Post-MAF celebration on 27 Sep. Im sure it will be great fun!

Familiarisation Day

Last Saturday was Familiarisation Day! Many senior volunteers came and it was like reunion after semester break. We have 20 odd new volunteers, which is quite promising.

It began with cakes and barley drink, prepared with heart and soul.

We had our customary Bingo. I learnt about this fantastic game a week ago and I was pleasantly surprised by how easy it allowed elderly and volunteers to warm up to one another.

Next we played the Chopstick-game where we had to pass marbles around with chopsticks. It was a game that involves much concentration, coordination and teamwork. It is the game that allowed me to experience the “most number of laughing elderly” in my life thus far. I totally enjoyed it.

Following that, Scavenger Hunt was good. I was really touched that many elderly, and as many volunteers, went the extra mile to make this simple activity enjoyable.

The Lucky Draw was also good. Here are our winners.

The lucky draw prizes were basic food items yet these photos resemble that from Econ Nite where cash prizes are involved.

I believe many elderly and volunteers enjoyed this get-together as much as I did. One of our new volunteers, Bernard, told me that his elderly asked if he would visit him. It reminds me that beneath the attendance sheet and pebbles, LB has fostered bonds between elderly and volunteers. I hope that our new volunteers will cherish these bonds and will continue with the subsequent visits.

Forget that lousy MC who should have prepared himself before speaking into a mic and not talk in a monotone etc.

I think Fam Day was great. Thank you all who turned up to help!

Jie Li~! She will receive a prize from Sin En, our most dedicated chairperson, during our LAST official visit tomorrow~! Jie Li blogged about the Teochew visit on last Dec 15. It was a reflective and inspirational entry & it goes like this..

Have you ever wondered if given a chance to be reborn, will you choose to live on Earth? In fact, I’ve never think of this question until Uncle Wong raised it during our LB visit on 15th dec. Now to think of it, I may still choose to live on Earth(because of limited choices) but Uncle Wong begs to differ. He explained that the Earth is in a critical state now as a result of deforestation and that the Earth’s heath will deteriorate in future considering disastrous effects of global warming and such.

As he continued to mention the Bali Climate Talk, I thought we were having a small Geography discussion on environmental issues! I was really taken aback by his creativity and knowledge, especially since Uncle Wong and Uncle Liu, who was staying with him, were talking about their lack of knowledge due to low academic qualifications or no schooling opportunities just minutes ago. Even so, they did not give up on learning and keep up with current affairs by listening to news on radio. Uncle Liu even clarified his doubt on the usage of a Chinese term with us. Their enthusiasm and passion in learning serve as an inspiration for us to work harder and overcome obstacles when faced with difficulties. Perhaps they knew what it is like to fall behind others and the sufferings ignorance will bring, and that is why they shower us with kind advices and reminders. While the uncles learned some facts from us, I think we have even more to learn from them=P

When our group of four( Victor, Tan Ching, Serena and me) visited Uncle Yeo after that, he welcomed us warmly with his cheerful smile and treated us chrysanthemum tea as usual but this time he had a bandage on his head. Later, we learned from him that he was attacked by an old lady(a cleaner) who quarreled with him over a metal can when he was collecting the cans at the hawker centre. Apparently, his injury is quite severe as the woman hit his head with the sugarcane glass several times. To think he had to meet with this kind of mishap when collecting empty cans is tiring enough and does not pay well at all. However, Uncle Yeo faced the difficulties in his life bravely with an optimistic outlook which is very admirable.

Many a times, we feel defeated by small problems but on a bigger picture, our problems may be insignificant as compared to those who have to put on a bitter struggle to survive. So sometimes we should step back and be happy with we have.

It would be great if we can save some metal cans for Uncle Yeo since we will be drinking more drinks with Christmas coming up! haha=) my long winded entry ends here.. Happy Holiday!

At the end of the celebrating, we moved the tables back into place & stacked up the chairs. And I witnessed a disturbing incident. Luke wanted to help an elderly man with something but the elderly man starkly rejected his help. I went forward to ask Luke whether he knew why was he rejected. He speculated that maybe some old people want to DIY to show that they are still useful. That is very true. On the other hand, we have elderly who are ever so thankful of any help rendered.

LB would like to express our gratitude to Weiching, Wilson, Jiayan, Jasmine, Geraldine & a certain elderly: Xiao Yun.

PS: If you were to ask me what buns do I like, I would say ~~the bigger the better~~ Da Bao (pork) & Char Siew Bao. =)

16 Feb hokkien visit :D

ysd we went for our hokkien visits! this time there was a new elderly at e 7th floor, so weijian wilson n i went to her door n knocked for a while b4 someone finally answered. e auntie tot we were selling stuff n kept saying dunwan so in e end we din manage to step inside her hse at all :(

den, we went to e blind sisters hse. for e first time e tv was on.e younger sis was listening to wang jin nian hua at a reali loud volume. she has a reali bad cough, e dry type, bt she reali dun lik to see doctor or take medicine. bt she seems so xinku cos she kept coughing aft every few sentences. During our conversation she mentioned abt some of e older volunteers, n asked y nw lik nv reali hear fr them alr. weijian couldn’t accept e fact tt she still doesnt rmb his name. haha. he sae he visit her continuously for two yrs alr, bt she sae our voice all sound e same to her :(

wilson was talking to e elder sis.i dun reali noe wad they talking abt bt she seems q agitated at certain parts.wilson wad hv u done?hee jus kidding.i tink talking abt her son n daughter in law. e two sisters will lik argue,e elder sis will kp sayin e younger sis so picky w food cos she onli eats rice strictly no beehoon. bt we still lik visiting them.e younger sister always laugh :)

den we went to visit uncle lee! hm we asked him wad kind of songs he lik,he mentioned bai guang n some others tt we reali dun rmb or heard of.wilson still asked me is bai guang a male or female lo.den duno y we started talking abt religious rites. Uncle lee is so chatty n easy to talk to. Just hv to ask him one qns den he’ll start talking a lot alr :)

Swe Swe's farewell + Weiching's 22nd bday

Swe Swe, our petite Welfare IC will be flying for Melbourne. Being Samaritans by nature, the Committee (namely those exempted from duties in Ethelonter V) decided to pay for her last meal in Singapore.

Okay I lied. She will only be leaving on a jetplane on Sun 10 Feb. It appears she managed to have breakfast the next morning too.

How did such a cute girl appear in LB? Sin En thought that I had recruited her from CSC Day 2007! (Sin En has a really negative impression of me..) The fact is Swe Swe was my tutorial mate in Year 1. I heard from a common friend that she's always on the Dean's list (not the black one). Pretty impressive stuff that anti-theorises "Big brain = Smart".

I had tried inviting a few friends to do community service because I believe one cannot be of much help. I was rejected with reasons (or should I say excuses?) such as "I don't have the time" & "I would rather spend the time earning money". They made me wonder whether we are friends. I gave up inviting other friends to shut the rejection.

On a rather surprising day, Swe Swe came up to me (online) to ask about LB. I brought her to the CSC Day 2007. As usual, some thought that I had changed my girlfriend again. Zzz.. Ultimately, she joined. I told her no one wanted to be in the committee so we had a go at it.

Dear all,

This is my first post here=). On the 5th of Jan, we had our 1st visit of the New Year. A great way to start 2008! =)

Our group visited 2 elderly. The 1st one is Guan Yin auntie. It was my first time visiting her. At the beginning, I was a little scared as the seniors said that she prefer guys to gals. However, as the seniors started chatting with her, I started enjoying the session.=) We started chatting abt the coming CNY and realised that she actually help people (whose zodiac clashes with the coming year of the rat) pay respect to Tai4 Shui4. We stayed there for quite sometime before proceeding to the next elderly, Mdm Quek. We helped her read a CNY card from her relative. She is invited for a wedding dinner in Malacca and hope she will enjoy her trip there=). She is always so friendly and throughout the conversion with her, she is always smilinG. I really enjoyed visiting her.

Although during these visits, I was less involved in the actual conversation with them, I truly enjoyed the session. Just able to listen to them share their past and experiences and seeing the smile and the many 'thank you' they said after the visit, it make me feel contented and glad to be there. =) Such visits allow me to learn and reflect on things and it is certainly an experience that is unforgettable. :)

Erm....it’s been a short while since i blog and I can remember very clearly that the last time i blog was for my Philosophy Exposure module. During the blogging sessions for the Philosophy Exposure module, I can see lots and lots of blogging posts that other students made and seeing so much makes me ended up in fear and anxiety, with always thinking if I am blogging the right thing and whether I am blogging enough. At last, the module ended successfully…phew… but….this will not deter me from blogging again and here I am…..starting my blogging session with “Lb on the blog”. Yipee!!!

It was our usual Teochew visit on the 5th Jan 08 and through the visit, our group did learn a lot of things from the elderly.

First lesson: During the visit to Uncle Wong and Uncle Liu who live together, we mentioned to them that we will be having our CSC Day on the 19th Jan 2008 and we would like them to participate in the event and confirm with us their attendance. They are interested in the event but Uncle Liu mentioned that he has “inside news” that the “Fo Jiao Ju Si Lin” (if my research is correct, correct me if I am wrong) located at Kim Yam Road might be having the annual Chinese New Year event and it will be giving out S$150 to the invited elderly. S$150 might be a small amount to us but to the elderly, it is really a big amount in which they need for their daily lives. Thus Uncle Liu said that he might be attending the “Fo Jiao Ju Si Lin” event and gives a miss to our CSC day but it is alright as we understand the situation Uncle Liu and the other elderly are in. Anyway, the answer given by Uncle Liu is not final yet and there might be a miracle where we will see Uncle Liu and Uncle Wong at our CSC Day. (‘’,)

Second lesson: The last visit of the day is to visit Uncle Yeo, the uncle who always offered us chrysanthemum tea and make sure every and each of us in the group gets a packet of it and drink it up. Our group really appreciate for the drink Uncle Yeo offered. (‘’,) Despite the injury that Uncle Yeo got from the attack a few weeks ago, it still did not deter him from collecting the used drinking cans. During the visit, both Jie Li and Serena bought empty cans from their home for Uncle Yeo and from the cans collected, we learned from Uncle Yeo that there are 2 different types of cans and the types of can that can be recycled are those made of aluminum and in which are soft and can be crushed easily. Those tin cans use for the drinks such as Pineapple and Bird Nest Drinks seem to be not able to recycle. Thus, from this, we know that what matters is not just on collecting empty metal cans but should be on collecting those which can be recycled.

Through the 2 hours visit, we students managed to learn quite a bit from the elderly and it seems like there are more to learn from the upcoming visits.

Merry Christmas!

I must say I enjoyed myself thoroughly for the X'mas gathering.
Special thanks to Weijian for giving me the chance to be Santa Claus.
Sorry if I hadn't been good enough - I am not professional ok. I will buck up no worries. :-p

This must be the umpteenth time I have seen the elderly play Bingo - they never seem to grow tired of the game! I recall that some time back I was kinda turned off by the whole idea of playing Bingo during such get-togethers for the elderly. In all honesty, I was on the verge of abolishing the game from the surface of the earth at that time (had I been granted Harry Potter's powers, I might have done that!).

However, upon reflection, I slowly came to realize that perhaps playing the same monotonous Bingo might not actually be that monotonous for the elderly. Through the lens of an undergraduate, all I could see was the monotony of the game. I failed to recognize that my life, or rather, our lives as undergraduates have been much more happening, to the extent that the little thrills that Bingo brings about are belittled. We terrorize KTV lounges, we colonize shopping malls, parks, restaurants and cinemas. Bingo, to us, is nothing more than childplay - the most boring way to spend an afternoon. Yet for the elderly, their lives might comprise of the routine watching of re-runs of Mediacorp, TCS or even SBC drama serials, going downstairs for a walk, a chat, a coffee and cleaning up the house (which might take an entire day, especially if they stay alone, or with just another person) - all relatively mundane tasks. The thrill of Bingo, might have a larger impact on them, as compared to us.

I guess this is the one good thing about volunteering - we learn to empathize with others, and we learn to realize how fortunate we, in fact, are. I hope I will never get sick of watching the elderly playing Bingo again. :-)

Sorry for the sombreness of the entry suddenly. Oops. It's my first time blogging here anyway. Let's give a big round of applause to the LB committee for a job well done, as well as the two emcees - the resident emcee for LB Xiaoyun and the apprentice emcee Geraldine! Let's look forward to 2008! :-)

LB X'mas Celebration~!

Hohoho Merry Xmas everyone!! LB celebrated Christmas yesterday (22nd Dec 07) with the elderly as usual at the void deck. It is not really known to many people but the MCs yesterday mentioned that it was 冬至 as well, or more commonly known as the 汤圆 festival where people last time gathered around their stoves in winter to eat duplings as a symbol of 团圆。Well actually I'm not very sure, I might have mixed it up with 团圆饭, but anyway I think the meaning is still there! I thought it was a pity that we couldn't have some rice dumplings for the elderly but nevertheless, food and drink was going around and the festive mood was really high thanks to all who made the event such a success! :)I think the idea of 团圆struck me more than Christmas itself in this context, because it really encompassed the significance of the get-together with the elderly to celebrate, no matter what festival it's for.

We had the usual lucky draw yesterday, but it never struck me so hard before how very different lucky draws can be. I was at a lucky draw the night before as well and the prizes comprised of things like Guess Watches, Crumpler bags, etc etc. The nature of the gifts were as such and yet everyone taking part in the lucky draw was still comparing the "value" of the gifts. But yesterday, the elderly were already really glad to receive nice little food packs from us. I was really touched at the way they tried so hard to involve themselves in the games and tried to win, never taking things for granted. In life's journey we still have so much to learn from them and every session I attend I find that I'm learning something new...

Ok so here's wishing everyone a super duper Merry Xmas and a Happy New Year!! May LB have a great 2008 as it did 2007 and may we be able to learn more from the elderly next year as well! See you guys next year! :)

Have you ever wondered if given a chance to be reborn, will you choose to live on Earth? In fact, I’ve never think of this question until Uncle Wong raised it during our LB visit on 15th dec. Now to think of it, I may still choose to live on Earth(because of limited choices) but Uncle Wong begs to differ. He explained that the Earth is in a critical state now as a result of deforestation and that the Earth’s heath will deteriorate in future considering disastrous effects of global warming and such.

As he continued to mention the Bali Climate Talk, I thought we were having a small Geography discussion on environmental issues! I was really taken aback by his creativity and knowledge, especially since Uncle Wong and Uncle Liu, who was staying with him, were talking about their lack of knowledge due to low academic qualifications or no schooling opportunities just minutes ago. Even so, they did not give up on learning and keep up with current affairs by listening to news on radio. Uncle Liu even clarified his doubt on the usage of a Chinese term with us. Their enthusiasm and passion in learning serve as an inspiration for us to work harder and overcome obstacles when faced with difficulties. Perhaps they knew what it is like to fall behind others and the sufferings ignorance will bring, and that is why they shower us with kind advices and reminders. While the uncles learned some facts from us, I think we have even more to learn from them=P

When our group of four( Victor, Tan Ching, Serena and me) visited Uncle Yeo after that, he welcomed us warmly with his cheerful smile and treated us chrysanthemum tea as usual but this time he had a bandage on his head. Later, we learned from him that he was attacked by an old lady(a cleaner) who quarreled with him over a metal can when he was collecting the cans at the hawker centre. Apparently, his injury is quite severe as the woman hit his head with the sugarcane glass several times. To think he had to meet with this kind of mishap when collecting empty cans is tiring enough and does not pay well at all. However, Uncle Yeo faced the difficulties in his life bravely with an optimistic outlook which is very admirable.

Many a times, we feel defeated by small problems but on a bigger picture, our problems may be insignificant as compared to those who have to put on a bitter struggle to survive. So sometimes we should step back and be happy with we have.

It would be great if we can save some metal cans for Uncle Yeo since we will be drinking more drinks with Christmas coming up! haha=) my long winded entry ends here.. Happy Holiday!

15 Dec Visit(Singlish)

After a long break from visits, we have the visit resume as usual. However, not many ppl turn up as many of them were not in sg. The group leader, Suan Hong was unable to attend for the visit while Swe Swe was not in sg. Hence, i was accompanied by Terence and Luke for the visit.

As usual, we visit Madam Quek and her place was always spick and span. So we chatted with her for awhile till her frenz came to visit her. Then we left to visit the next elderly. The elderly is Mdm Papa from Ipoh. It was nice chatting with her .She shared with us the story about her family, about herself when she was young (this auntie was quite naughty when she was young ..keke..) and also about the period during the occupation of the Japanese. The life at that times was tough. She says at that time, it was difficult to get the basic necessities such as milk and even shampoo which we took it for granted nowadays.

I felt that we are very fortunate to have everything we want and yet we are still complaining of lacking this and that. We are also very fortunate to have the chance to get an education which most of these elderly does not have the chance to do so. Ok.. thats all for now.. Looking forward for the Christmas celebration with the elderly on the 22nd December =)

Hi everyone!

I am Wee Kiong, a new member joining in the LB house visits today! Was attached to the Hokkien Dialect Group today with Wei Jian, Yu Pei, Fred and Yong Wei today. Well, the experience was not too bad, despite the heavy downpour we encountered (on our way to IKEA after the visits to buy stuff for the upcoming events), everything went quite smoothly still. :P

I was quite apprehensive at first on what I would expect on my first house visit today, but things turned out ok after all. The elderly whom we visited today were very hospitable towards us, although the blind sisters or is it the younger one if I am not wrong was a bit shy at first, but they managed to open up more later on, with Fred breaking the ice.

When we turned up at Uncle Lee's house, he was in the shower and we waited a while for him while Auntie Lee offered us drinks. It had started to pour by then and when we saw Uncle Lee he was still complaining of being quite breathless given the cold weather and we advised him to put on some warmer clothing. Was told by my teammates that Uncle Lee is quite a sociable elderly and he went on to tell us of his younger days when he used to go fishing out in the open sea.

Well overall the experience was quite like how I always interacted with my grandparents, and I had a great time today! See you guys soon again on the next visits!

Hello, fellow LBians!

There has been a break from visits recently! Hope you are well rested
and ready to do the visits again!!

Here's a little story that i've been yearning to share!!

After our Mid-autumn festival (MAF) celebration some weeks back,
Weijian (hokkien grp leader) and I went to to Blind Sisters' to give
them the mooncakes.

When we reached, one of the sisters was sleeping and the other was
sitting on the floor.We chatted with her for a while and then I began
to notice what she was doing as she talked to us...

She was fixing a button that has dropped out from her blouse back
onto it with a needle and thread!

I was taken aback by it at first because she can hardly see anything!
And then I realised that I have underestimated her totally. When we
praised her for her good skill, and asked her how did she put the
thread thru the needle hole, she casually laughed it off and said 'by
touch lo'(in hokkien).

I was impressed not just by her sewing skills and sense of touch, but
more so by her cheerfulness. This joy at heart has kept her away from
letting her bad eyesight hinder her life.

We then left her house filled with admiration and a bit of shame
because we often let inconsequential events of life hinder us from
moving on, when there are even greater obstacles (these elderly have
overcome many of them already) waiting for us.

Yes! So let us all keep joy in our hearts so we can conquer even
greater challenges ahead!

The L-derly here is Mdm Quek J F from Malacca. She's Hainanese. Guess what's the first question one would ask after knowing that she's Hainanese?

"Do you know how to make Hainanese chicken rice?"

I find it amusing because I have heard Swe Swe asking her that before! And today Hui4 Qun2 (the girl in blue, trying to act cute) also asked her that. Maybe I should ask my Singaporean friends whether they know how to prepare Rojak.

Yes, and I will remember to hand Mdm Quek the photos during the next visit or else I..

will do so during the next next visit. =)

LBFD 07~! (25 Aug)

Long Boring F Day? Nope~! Its LB Familiarisation Day~! (aka Let's Be Friends Day to me)

[1st contact made] "1:30pm at Commonwealth MRT station", the hand-made ticket to LBFD reads. We should have written the time in CAPS (somehow). Being nice people, Sin En, Swe Swe & I waited half an hour for the ~~latecomers~~ LB freshies. We had the perfect plan. The tall freshies could spot me, freshies with an average height could notice Sin En & the height-challenged freshies could see ~~Swe Swe~~ (name cancelled to protect the subject).

[Dispatching of Volunteers] We had so many volunteers & I am not exaggerating. The uncle in the MRT passenger service centre even publicly announced with conviction, "You people are blocking the passage of commuters! Please move away! People complained already!" That was the cue for our 1st wave of volunteers to set off.

[Set foot on objective] There were panda cakes, hot home-made barley & uncooked macaroni(?!). We played Bingo with the L-derly, weaved macaronis through strings for them (yes i saw it) & gave canned food & dried rations to them~! (Courtesy of the best Project C.A.N. committee ever) Personally, I found the weaving of macaronis through strings a brilliant activity for the L-derly. Maybe we can challenge them to weave strings through needles during Mid Autumn Festival celebration.. Hmm..

[Presentation of awards] "How to use this bottle? =)"

"Each time you come for an LB visit or special event, we will give you some pebbles in appreciation of your efforts. You can place them in this bottle. After a year with LB, you will have a bottle of colourful pebbles!!"

Sweeet! Be an LB volunteer & you become a Pokemon trainer too. Collect them all!

Hahaha it's my first time blogging leh can you believe it!? [I ususally keep things deep in my heart hehehehe^^]

I thought i should tell you about this elderly which we have been visiting over a year! She's the Canto-very-chim ah ma on level 9!!

I must say that she's pretty challenging for me coz her canto really very chim.. (I can't understand what she says most of the time.. keke..) and my Canto is deproving! But the Canto group never gave up over the past 1 year! During the last visit, we took 45 mins to finally understand full what she needs - a horse brand ear drip that can relieve pain in the ear. (Hahaha if Ming Wei wasn't with us, it could have taken a day!!).. and a can of luncheon meat if there's leftover money from buying the ear drip..

Ah ma was also patient enough with us lah huh... 45 mins of repeating the decriptions of the ear drip so many times!! Finally... Yupei (Hokkien actually) set out in her mission to get the stuff, came back in less than an hour and shocked the ah ma coz the wu can rou Yupei bought is 30 cents cheaper than what she bought! For a while the ah ma couldn't recover from the 30 cents shock.. hahahaha and was so damn thankful for Yupei for getting her a better deal!! *clapssss... but i think that pharmacy don't sell the horse brand one so Yupei got her another which I've used before.. hahaha. hope the pain's gone now ^^

For this ah ma we try our best to chat with her about things that happen to her while we clean up the place like if her room-mate is decent and gives her rental.. etc..

Although we are better at cleaning the house than really keep her entertained with conversations, I feel that us visiting her has brightened her up quite a bit..ehem. not i bhb ar...hahaha coz at when we first visited her she was quite moody and quiet.. but now she will take initiative to talk to us!Yup.. i really hope that i can have more of such encounters..(but quality above quantity of course!)

hahahaha quite a long first entry huh! *clapssss i'm really happy that have forged a rather close relationship with this ah ma and it's now time to make it even stronger!

12 Aug Visit

Visit was pretty interesting. Went to Blind sisters with Jason and Marcus. Jason really has a way with the younger sis. We're having a conversation when she made a rather 'interesting' statement, and Jason replied her. (For more details, can check with us :P). But the thing is that after that she kept laughing and laughing, for at least 5 mins. This's the 1st time I've seen her laughing so happily! Really felt so happy looking at her laugh that way. =D

As for Uncle Lee, we (or rather more of he) was talking about politics and about his school life in the past. Sounds familiar.. ha. At first, tot that he wanted to watch TV, but think he still prefers talking to us afterall.

Anws, LB Familarisation Day is around the corner, on 25 Aug. Look out for more details!

LB visit (14/07/07)

Yoz people,

There were some new faces at LB today, from E4 (including freshies and some erm... older seniors as well). As usual, we were split up into our different dialect groups.

As usual, my group went to visit Blind sisters. For those who don't know, the elder sister had a fall a month or 2 back. But the good thing is that she is able to walk, though it still hurts. Usually she don't talk when we visit them. However, this time round she was more willing to talk, but she was pretty pessimistic. On the other hand, the younger sis is more optimistic. Quite a big contrast! Of cse, not just in this area. Anyway, there are some kind souls who actually bring food for the sisters everyday. So much that the younger sis is complaining that she is tired of eating bee hoon and noodles. (yeap, that's another thing that is different. The elder sis isn't really concerned about food..)

We also went to Uncle Lee, who shared with us his story of how he worked when he was younger. He also complained about his health, but he seems to look better since the last time I saw him. Actually, he was talking to Fred most of time, and for those who don't know, ususally Uncle Lee prefers to concentrate talking to just 1 person.

At the end of it, we had a debrief and heard that some of the newcomers did quite well in engaging the elderly. Hope that they will stay on in the LB family!

The Mini Visit On 02 Jun 2007

Not much. haha... I mean, not many volunteers came.

There was a new volunteer called Yvonne, from Chem Yr2 (going Yr3). Let's all welcome her!!! *streamers falling down*

Yvonne is hokkien speaking, so she followed me to go to Uncle Lee's and Blind Sisters'. Uncle Lee still looked OK. In fact, I think he looked got 'more blood' than the last time I saw him (which I think was half a yr ago bah...). He still complained of the same health problems, except that the regular, expensive medication managed to keep his health from deteriorating.

After that, we went to visit Blind Sisters'. The elder sis was lying on her bed and she complained that she's in a lot of pain and couldn't move about. The younger sis complained about the weather etc. They too, looked good. Though I can't really say about the elder sis cos I didn't really talk to her cos she was hard of hearing. Most of the time, I didn't know if she couldn't hear me or couldn't understand my half-bucket-full hokkien...

Mei Mei reached at about 4pm after her work. Since she was so attached to the blind sisters, we prolonged the visit so that she could spend quality time with them *cue music*.

Oh yah, the younger sis said she was sick of the ONE hokkien CD Liangyu gave her (and hiam the CD dat Mei Mei gave her) and hoped to have more. If you guys are able to download or get your hands on some CDs, please do contribute. No need to especially buy for them, k? Can Liangyu tell us what kind of hokkien songs you got for her? cos I suspect she don't like the more modern hokkien songs bah. Any clues??

yah, that was the part for the hokkien visit. Perhaps Vic can append his visit??

And yah, the committee met up after the visit \o/ We still meet one, k? Planned for the elections for the new comm, so you guys wait for the news of opening up of the elections bah ;P

Visit after the exams

VISIT AFTER THE EXAMS 07/08

Haiz.. Visit was quite sad today. One of the blind sisters (the elderly who is partially blind) is hospitalised since 2 weeks ago, cause she had a fall, and injured her leg, so in Alexandra Hospital now. She will have operation also. Heard that she fell while going toliet, and both of the sisters fell. At least one of them isn't injured. And there are people helping to deliver food to her everyday, so don't have to worry about her meals. But we could see that she was quite lonely, cause she talked more today. But the sisters do communicate through phone calls, so at least she's updated.

Uncle Lee is also having trouble walking, cannot even go downstairs, so he's quite bored at home. While chatting, Yu Pei told me that he saw Auntie crying, but we have no idea why, cause Uncle Lee was just talking about the usual stuff about his visit to the hospital. Really wondered why she cried..

I also heard that Uncle Yeo will be going for operation cause of his intestine. This will be some time in July.

It's really sad seeing the elderly growing weaker by the day, especially when you visit the same elderly often. How can we console them? Really lost for words sometimes, when they talk about their health. But at least there's someone to talk to them. Pray that they will get well soon, or at least their condition don't worsen.

We are looking for committed, kind & capable people to join the next organising committee for LB to help LB grow from strength to strength. N what this means is that all of you, LB volunteers out there are eligible!

1. Chairperson: Leads the LB committee to plan all LB activities, Oversees all LB activities and reports to the VPIA of CSC regarding any problems faced.

2. Vice-chairperson: Assist the chairperson in the execution of all LB activities and in charge of the attendance of volunteers.

3. Programmers (X2): Leads a small group of volunteers to plan outings and celebrations for the elderly.

4. Secretary: In charge of taking minutes during the LB committee's meetings and assists the chairperson in paperwork

5. Treasurer: In charge of the budget of LB, assist the claims made for items bought.

6. Welfare coordinator: Organise activities to bond volunteers together.

7. Publicity officer: Takes photo for LB's events and acts as the link between the publicity team in CSC's management committee and LB, writes articles and maintains LB blog

LB Visit (07 Apr 07)

Hm.. Tot that James had wanted to post. Guess that he must have e-mailed his 'report' to vic le. haha.. He had wanted to say how Guan Yin auntie misses him and that she has a good memory. Thanks for the chocs anw! Attendance was pretty good for this visit.

Blind sisters were asleep, so Yu Pei and I decided to visit Uncle Lee 1st instead. But the visit lasted for 2 hours, as Wan Zhen who joined us later, told us that blind sisters were still sleeping. Uncle Lee's health is still affected by the weather, and during rainy weathers, his asthma acts up. He is also unable to walk long distances, and has been staying at home more often. Sometimes, i don't know how to react when he shakes his head. Think the best we can do is to listen to him.

On a brighter note, the new topic this time round was fishing! First time i hear him talk about it. Told us that in his younger days, he used to fish with his friends. Got times when he managed to catch quite a lot, but it really depends on luck. Also talked about how fishes 'study', and knew how to eat only live sotongs. Got time that he, luckily, managed to catch lobster, and even shark (the medium size one lah) too. Interesting, before we knew it, the 2 hours had passed! haha..

Everyone work hard for exams! Will be over soon! =)

CHINESE NEW YEAR CELEBRATIONS 07 (Edited)

Say "L"!

Yeap, Sin En, I'm sure the elderly and the volunteers, old and new enjoyed themselves. It was great!

Huat ah!

This celebration was pretty different as cny songs were sang throughout the whole event rather than just all at a go. Certainly a good idea, so that the elderly won't feel too bored listening to song after song after song after... Also, there were many new games.

First game up was BINGO, our classic game, which was played while the Ls were enjoying their 'Tan Yuan'. Next was the 'Peel the Oranges' fastest compeition. Each elderly was asked to peel an orange and the table that completes the task the fastest wins. And 'jiang hai shi lao de la', and they completed peeling the oranges so very quickly. Must offer more challenge next time. (Maybe open durian instead? :P)

Spotting the difference

Then we performed a skit. And laughter was heard when I was introduced as Suan Hong's dad and Swe Swe as her mum. Guess they must have found it ironic that we have such a tall son. But then again, its possible mah, if he gets our recessive genes, then... Anyway, the Ls were supposed to spot the differences between the two skits that we performed. Not bad, they managed to spot most of the errors. (Good thing they did, otherwise Suan Hong and Tan Ching might have to carry on hugging forever.)

Piecing the puzzle

After this, we played another table game. The Ls had to piece two complete puzzles. (yea, that's what Sin En was cutting out yesterday) They didn't finish this as quickly as the oranges challenge, but nevertherless, the same group who won the previous table challenge completed this the quickest too.

Lucky draw was up next, divided into three sections. Firstly, five lucky winners who found a sheet of paper underneath their table won. Next, was the drawing of pin-pong balls to decide the next five winners. For the ultimate prize, Ls were asked to decide their favorite group for the singing portion. And the lucky winner was the choosen from the votes.

We then 'lao yu sheng'. Some of the Ls were quite nice, and asked us to 'lao' and eat with them also. For our finale, we sang 'Cai Sheng Dao' together.

CNY Celebrations 07!

Hey everyone!

We will be celebrating our Chinese New Year with our elderly this Sat, 03/03/07 at the void deck of Block 3 (yeap, the usual place where we hold our celebrations).

There'll be games, food and also our very own befrienders singing for u!! So must come k? Seeya! =)
